Born and raised in New York City, Ricky Powell started photographing in the spring of 1985. His work is characterized as “environmental” photography, featuring subjects through a uniquely intimate lens. His personal relationship with many major musicians gave him access to the hip hop scene of the 80s and 90s, and he has shot Run DMC, the Beastie Boys, and LL Cool J among others. His public access show Rappin’ With the Rickster aired from 1990-1996  and was touted as the hippest-ever public TV show. He featured candid footage and intimate interviews born out of his unique access to some of New York’s leading artists and musicians of the time. Ricky Powell currently lives and works in New York City.
