Filmmaker, curator and cultural icon Aaron Rose inaugurated our Project Space with the launch of his unique art bar concept, La Rosa Social Club. After many years of dreaming, Aaron realized his vision of transporting art “outside of the confines of the white cube.”
By creating a bar with multiple 3-dimensional installations and custom interiors to create an ambience that was a hybrid of “a Mexican dive bar, a 1960’s office building and an underground dance club circa Berlin 1982,” La Rosa lived for only four nights in an effort to make those in attendance put down their phones and live in the moment.
“I believe the impermanence added a certain sort of specialness to the experience if you were there since it only lasted for a very short period of time. It brought a sense of urgency but then also a sense of being part of something historical, even if that’s manufactured history… I think we tend not to appreciate things until they go away sometimes.”—Aaron Rose.
Aaron and an impressive roster of contemporary artists, including Ed Templeton, Chris Johanson, Wes Lang, Barbara Stauffacher-Solomon, Gusmano Cesaretti, Chris Lux, Brian Roettinger, Terry Richardson, Alia Penner, Geoff McFetridge, Alexis Ross, Wyatt Troll, Jesse Spears, Barry McGee, Nate Walton, Natalie Krim, Olivier Zahm, Cali Thornhill-Dewitt, Stephan Strumbel, Deanna Templeton, Lola Rose Thompson, Benjamin Baretto, and Cheryl Dunn, lent their talents to various aspects of the bar.
