Naeem Juwan - aka Spank Rock - is an old friend of the Allday crew. He was among the first to shake the Baltimore scene with cutting-edge EDM beats fused with sharp hip-hop skills, with a rebellious attitude towards the archetypal rapper status. Since he dropped his debut studio album, "Yoyoyoyoyo," he has been making waves both in the hiphop and dance scenes. Continuning the momentum, Naeem dropped a self released LP, titled "Everything is Boring and Everyone is a Fucking Liar" on his own record label Bad Blood Records in 2011, and is currently on the road promoting his upcoming album.
We have the lowdown on his newest projects and current inspirations.
Tell us a little about the new album: any theme, concept, particular style or inspiration?
Don't want to give too many details about the new album, but I have been thinking a lot about Sun Ra, Isaac Hayes "Hot Buttered Soul," and A Tribe Called Quest "Midnight Marauders".
When can we expect it?
The 1st quarter of 2015.
Top 3 artists you can't get enough of?
Kirin J Callinan, Rae Sremmurd, Danny L Harle.
You choose your collaborations with visual artists very carefully. Who have you worked with for this upcoming album? Are there any artists you've been feeling lately or wanting to work with?
It's been fun working with Photographer Sean Maung. And I would love to work with Jamian Juliano Villani.
