We talk with Polanski Founder, Irwin Tobias Matutina about the much anticipated fourth issue of Polanski. For the Allday Digest, he shares some new spreads as well as a few from older issues. How did the Polanski publication come about? Why did you choose such name?
Polanski started as a “found imagery” blog on Tumblr where it grew a cult-like following. We’re currently not at liberty to say where the name comes from.
When and why did you decide to go to print? What was that transition like?
We realized we had a large audience on our blog, so to keep things interesting we chose to do the complete opposite by going into print. We weren’t sure how it was going to happen, but an opportunity came up and we took it and ran with it. It’s been a slow, but fairly seamless transition. A lot of the people following the blog are photographers, so we started reaching out to them to see if they would be interested in contributing. We had a good response so we were able to put our first hard-copy out in 2011. We wanted the publication to feel like a cross between a fashion publication and an artist book. All issues have been limited to 500 copies and hand-numbered.
